You can wander endlessly from Jakes on footpaths and trails that weave their way over hills and pasture, down lanes and along the sea.

Bike to Billy's Bay Fishing Beach and on to Ft. Charles
On road (go left, west) - Jakes to Billy's Bay - approx. 2 miles. Billy's Bay to Ft. Charles - another 2 miles.
Pass watermelons growing in a field, people sitting on the porch, land for sale, a house decorated with wonderful shell work, a man making fish pots, among other things of interest. Then at Billy's Bay sight Buccaneer another dream house built by Sally Henzell. At Buccaneer - and there is a big sign - turn down the lane to visit Billy's Bay Fishing Beach. It becomes more isolated after Billy's Bay to Ft. Charles. Spend the return ride contemplating weather a piece of land in Treasure Beach with a house designed by Sally wouldn't be a wise move. (From Ft. Charles it is possible to hike 11 miles down a practically deserted coast all the way to Black River, you would reach the village of Paratee about half way.)
Bike to Great Bay & the Bluffs
From Jakes - head right towards Calabash Bay. At the corner stop sign/bus stop, go left rather than down to the beach. At the shopping plaza, turn right and follow the road to House of Treasures, a little wood white and blue workshop where the Treasure Beach Women's Group does craftwork. The collective is 40 women strong and they work mostly in calabash (making bowls and bags) and clay. They are open Tues. - Sat.'s mornings - 8 to 1.
At House of Treasures stop sign go left and take the road towards the sea - you'll make another right, which will put you near Tranquility Bay - the huge white building that sits alone on the sea blocking the coastline to Great Bay. Before you reach that white building, there is a playing field on your left - just where the barbed wire fence begins you'll see a well worn path that will take you on the shortcut to Great Bay - when you reach the end of the path there is a stile you will have to lift your bicycle over to get on the road that will take you through the community of Great Bay (all this is much simpler than it sounds) - here you will find Zareeba and Shirley (see Rubs & Scrubs). Zareeba is a good place to leave your bicycle while you swim and explore Great Bay and the Pedro Bluffs.
