There are four beaches within easy walking distance of Jakes - Jack Spratt; Frenchman's; Calabash Bay and Old Wharf. The beaches are empty and beckoning to sun lovers - but please take precautions, the sun can be wicked. The waters are known for their ideal body surfing conditions. WARNING - there is constant undertow - sometimes stronger than others - at all beaches in Treasure Beach. That undertow has to be respected at all times. Locals know best, the staff at Jack Spratt will tell you where it's best to swim and where there are rocks and reef that should be avoided. Snor keling equipment is available for rent @ $10.00 a day - at the bar - talk to Dougie.

Calabash Bay - In the other direction - right from the road, walking east - follow the road to the bus stop & stop sign - about 5 minutes - turn right to the sea and you'll be at the fisherman's beach in Calabash Bay. There is a nice sandy beach here with good swimming as well as the convenience of cookshops and bars at fisherman's beach. Old Wharf - This is the area continuing east past Calabash Bay and the fisherman's beach - before you reach Great Bay and The Great Pedro Bluff. Old Wharf (approx. 15-minute walk from Calabash Bay) is the most private beach of the four close swimming beaches. Jack Spratt Beach - Follow the path to your right (looking to sea from Jakes Pool), it will lead you right there. Jack Spratt Beach is the safest beach for swimming. Be sure and get someone to show you how to stay clear of the reef. Frenchman's Beach - Scramble over the landmark Buttonwood Tree at the far end of Jack Spratt Beach, a tree that has inspired many artists for generations to paint and poetry. This will put you on to the fisherman's beach at Frenchman's. The beach stretches approximately a half-mile down the coastline. |
